When Your Neck Hurts First Thing in the Morning
Waking up with neck pain or stiffness can make the day start off on an unpleasant note. Sometimes the discomfort goes away after moving around for a while, but on other occasions, it can persist for several hours.
The way we sleep, the amount of time we spend in the same position, and how the neck moves during the night can all affect how we feel when we wake up.
In my practice, I frequently see people who come in saying: “During the day I feel fine, but I wake up with a tense neck.”
What Can Contribute to It?
Always Sleeping in the Same Position
Spending many hours without changing position can contribute to tension building up in the neck and shoulders. Pillow and Head Position
There is no perfect pillow for everyone. What matters is that it allows you to maintain a comfortable position and prevents your neck from being held in an awkward position for hours.
Tension Accumulated Throughout the Day
The problem does not always start at night. If we have spent many hours sitting, driving, or under stress during the day, we may go to bed with a significant amount of accumulated tension.
When should you pay attention?
If the pain appears occasionally and improves when you move, it may be a temporary discomfort. However, if you regularly wake up with neck pain, the discomfort lasts for many hours, or you are gradually experiencing reduced mobility, it is worth paying attention to it.
What I encounter most often in my practice are people who have spent months changing pillows without considering other factors in their daily routine.
Getting a good night’s sleep is important, but so is how we go to bed: staying active during the day, changing positions, and maintaining good neck mobility can make a difference.
If the pain is severe, occurs after an injury, or is accompanied by weakness, loss of sensation, or other significant symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
