Back Pain When Standing: Why Does It Occur?

When Standing Becomes Uncomfortable

Standing may seem like a simple activity, but for some people, remaining in this position for a while can cause back pain, tension, or a feeling of fatigue.

It can happen while working, waiting in line, cooking, or simply going for a walk. Often, the discomfort gradually increases and improves when sitting down or changing position.

I see this issue quite frequently in my practice, especially among people who spend many hours standing during their working day in Terrassa.

What Can Contribute to This Pain?

The back needs movement and the ability to adapt to different positions. When we remain standing for long periods without changing posture, certain areas may bear more load, leading to a feeling of strain.

Staying in the same position for too long

Although standing is natural, maintaining virtually the same posture for hours can be tiring for the back muscles.

Lack of movement

Walking, changing position, and moving the spine throughout the day can help distribute the load more evenly. In contrast, remaining still for long periods can contribute to a feeling of stiffness.

Accumulated fatigue

It does not always start at that moment. A long working day, too little rest, or spending many hours sitting before standing can also affect how your back feels.

Is It Normal to Feel Pain Every Time You Stand?

What I encounter most often in my practice are people who have gradually become accustomed to this pain because it only appears after standing for a while.

But just because discomfort is frequent does not mean you should consider it a normal part of your day.

Paying attention to when it appears, how long you need to stand before noticing it, and which movements relieve it can provide valuable information about what is happening.

Staying active, changing posture frequently, and maintaining good spinal mobility are simple habits that can help you feel more comfortable throughout the day.

If the pain is severe, appears suddenly, or is accompanied by weakness, loss of sensation, or other significant symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
