Headaches that come from the neck: a more common cause than it seems

When the problem doesn’t really start in the head

Many people think that headaches always have the same origin. Stress, fatigue, lack of sleep… and yes, all of that can play a role. But in practice, I very often see something different: headaches that actually begin in the neck.

It’s more common than it seems.

Some patients come in because they feel pressure in the forehead, discomfort behind the eyes, or constant tension in the head, and when we assess cervical mobility, we find a very stiff or overloaded neck.

How can the neck cause headaches?

The neck is full of muscles, joints, and nerves that work continuously. When this area loses mobility or accumulates too much tension, the body starts to compensate.

And one of the most common consequences is cervicogenic headache.

Accumulated muscle tension

Spending many hours sitting, working in front of a computer, or living with constant stress keeps the neck muscles continuously activated.

Over time, that tension can radiate to the head.

Lack of cervical mobility

When certain cervical vertebrae do not move properly, the body begins to develop stiffness and overload.

Many patients ask me why the pain keeps coming back again and again even though they rest. In many cases, the problem is not only muscular, but also related to mobility.

Signs that a headache may come from the neck

Not all headaches have the same origin, but there are certain symptoms that tend to repeat.

Pain that appears after many hours sitting down

It is very common in people who work on a computer or spend time looking at their phone.

Feeling of pressure in the back of the head (nape)

The tension usually starts at the back of the neck and rises toward the head.

Stiffness when moving the neck.

Many people notice that they have difficulty turning their head or that their neck feels constantly tight.

Stress also influences much more than we think.

In cities like Terrassa, the daily pace means many people live with a constant level of tension without realizing it.

And the body ends up reflecting it.

What I most often see in consultation are patients who have been accumulating physical tension for a long time without giving it much importance.

Until the body starts to take its toll.

How chiropractic care can help

The chiropractic approach aims to improve spinal mobility and reduce accumulated tension in the body.

It’s not just about temporarily relieving the headache, but about understanding what is causing that overload.

Better cervical mobility

When the neck regains movement, the pressure and associated tension often also decrease.

Less muscular load

Reducing tension in the neck and shoulders helps the body stop constantly compensating.

Better overall functioning

Many patients notice not only less pain, but also a general feeling of greater lightness and well-being.

When it is worth getting it checked

If the headache:

appears frequently
worsens after working
is accompanied by neck tension
or keeps coming back constantly

It is worth analysing whether the neck is involved.

Listening to these signs can prevent the problem from progressing.

The body usually gives warning signs before the problem becomes bigger.

Understanding the relationship between the neck and headaches can help you find a more effective and long-lasting solution.
