When the discomfort is concentrated on one side
Experiencing pain on one side of the back can be puzzling, especially when you don’t remember doing anything in particular that could have caused it.
Sometimes it appears after working, driving, or spending many hours in the same position. At other times, it is noticeable when turning your body, getting up from a chair, or simply at the end of the day.
I see this type of discomfort quite frequently in my practice. In many cases, it is related to how the back moves and to the tension that gradually builds up throughout the day.
What Can Contribute to Pain on One Side?
The back does not always work in a perfectly symmetrical way. Depending on our habits, certain movements can cause one side to bear more load than the other.
Sustained postures
Spending long hours sitting, standing, or driving can contribute to localized tension.
Repetitive movements
Always using the same side of the body at work, practicing certain sports, or performing repetitive physical efforts can affect how your back feels.
Lack of mobility
When one area of the spine moves less, other parts may have to compensate. Over time, this can lead to a feeling of stiffness or discomfort on one side of the back.
When Is It Worth Paying Attention?
What I encounter most often in my practice are people who have been experiencing the same pain for a long time but have learned to live with it.
If the discomfort keeps recurring, becomes more intense over time, or starts to limit everyday movements, it is worth assessing what may be contributing to it.
It is also important to consult a healthcare professional if the pain appears suddenly and intensely, occurs after an injury, or is accompanied by fever, weakness, loss of sensation, or other unusual symptoms.
Staying active, changing posture throughout the day, and maintaining good spinal mobility are simple habits that can help keep your back more comfortable.
